Kristen Wiig – Funny, Sexy & a Hair Color Diva!

June 20, 2012 By Laura Young 13 Comments

Kristen Wiig with auburn to brown hair

Here at HairColorCode HQ we’re massive fans of Kristen Wiig – her outgoing personality, the fact that she’s a naturally funny lady, and of course her willingness to experiment with her hair color, all add up to mean that she’s our new gal pal crush.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Kristen; she is an American actress, comedienne and writer currently starring as a cast member of Saturday Night Live. Kristen has appeared in numerous films, including Adventureland, Paul, MacGruber and Flight of the Concords and also voiced characters for How to Train Your Dragon and Looney Tunes.

She’s probably best known for her 2011 film Bridesmaids, billed as the female version of The Hangover, which she co-wrote and starred in. Bridesmaids earned her two prestigious nominations; Golden Globe for Best Actress and Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.

The style behind the laughs

Kristen doesn’t just express herself through her comedic roles; she also likes to mix it up with her style and is regularly seen on the red carpet rocking a creative, bold look, such as a bright red lip color, stunning cut-out dresses and fierce accessories.

Although she’s probably best known as a blonde with short, tumbling waves, like her character in Bridesmaids, Kristen is actually a hair color chameleon – she’s rocked deep dark brown, ombre-hued hair and a lovely mahogany tone, as well as golden blonde beachy locks.

Kristen has been blonde for most of her acting career and has switched between light blonde highlights to golden blonde sun-kissed waves multiple times.

She’s also rocked a light brown hue with golden blonde panels – this is one lady who is not afraid of experimenting with foils!

In summer 2011, she showcased ombre locks, sporting a deep rich chestnut color at the roots and through the mid-lengths of her hair, with light blonde tips.

She kept up this style to promote Bridesmaids during the summer and actually persuaded me to follow suit with ombre locks of my own!

Early 2012 saw another change for Kristen as she ditched the ombre for a rich, auburn-toned mahogany shade. Since then, she’s swapped from auburn to a brown so dark it’s almost black.

Kristen is lucky enough to suit a wide range of hair colors, from blonde to auburn to brown, and we’ve yet to see her with a hair don’t.

Kristen is a true chameleon that most definitely knows how to make a statement with her hair and her style – and that’s why we love her!

Top 5 Celebrities with Gray Hair

May 31, 2012 By Liz Randell 20 Comments

Are you a fan of the new gray hair trend? Love it or loathe it, gray hair is the color of the moment – as seen on these trendsetting celebs:

Kelly Osbourne

Celebrity transformations don’t come bigger than Miss Kelly O’s evolution from sulky teenager on the hit show ‘The Osbournes’ to the demure and ladylike fashion icon we see today.

Kelly has had some hair disasters in her time (remember the short black crop and the geisha girl style?!) but she’s also had many triumphs (blonde up-do’s and pink, red, blue and lilac locks) and if anyone can carry off a new trend, she can!

Most recently Kelly has been spotted sporting fashion forward gray hair, prompting a flurry of youtube videos and home coloring tutorials as fashionistas seek to emulate her pearly grey ‘do.

Kate Moss

Kate Moss with gray highlights

Style icon and model Kate has had some bad press over the years but she’s never faltered in her sense of style and true to form, Kate’s been spotted with streaks of silver gray in her signature blonde locks.

The color suits Kate’s skin tone perfectly and the gray acts to naturally highlight and break up the blonde shade, adding texture and interest to her otherwise classic crop.

Quoted as saying she finds gray hair “chic”, Kate is once again paving the way in the fashion stakes.

Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga with mixed gray and black hair

Never one to shy away from the limelight, Lady G has been photographed nude for the front cover of Vanity Fair with long straight gray blonde hair – as if gray wasn’t already the color to be seen in!

Gaga has been wearing her gray locks loose or messily pinned up and she recently appeared with striking dark gray and blue stripes. This lady can’t do a thing wrong in my book so if gray and blue are the new thing, prepare to book yourself an appointment with your colorist asap and work that shade with some full on attitude!

Pixie Geldof

You might not expect to find a gray hair on model and socialite Pixie’s head but this little lady is currently working a foxy gray hairstyle and she’s making it look cool to boot.

Pixie’s the youngest of our gray haired crowd and she’s proof that a short blunt crop showcases this on trend color perfectly, no matter what your age.

She’s been seen wearing her gray crop both sleek and tousled but either way she carries it off with a distinct air of being both cute and chic.

P!nk

Pink with short gray hair

Were you a little surprised when Pink showed off her baby bump on the Ellen show? Possibly, but what caught really people’s attention was her new gray hair!

She’s best known for her namesake color but P!nk has changed suit and moved to a more relaxed silvery gray shade. It’s beautifully laid back and both cool and easy to wear. Her gray hair is chopped short, with a lot of texture and a healthy shine.

Possibly the edgiest gray haired style in our line-up, Pink has got the attitude, coloring and trend just right.

Top 5 Celebrities With Pink Hair

November 22, 2011 By Liz Randell Leave a Comment

Brightly colored hair is increasingly popular amongst celebs and the current vogue is for candy colors and pastel shades. Pretty, soft and girly, pink hair is the choice of some of the most beautiful women in the spotlight. Take a look at our top five pink hair hotties:

Pink

Pink with blonde and pink hair

Surely pop punk P!nk is the queen of pink hair. She made this look famous with her cropped candyfloss hair way back in the year 2000 and even took her name from her favorite shade.

P!nk inspired us to try new ideas and push the boundaries of hair color, and although she occasionally flirts with white blonde, in our minds she will always be the original pink lady, loved by millions for her spunk and gritty style confidence.

Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga with bright pink hair

We’ve seen Lady Gaga with hair of every color of the rainbow but when she wears it pink it’s by far our pick of the bunch.

Pastel colors are Lady G’s signature hair look (well for this week at least!), along with baby pink hair extensions and panels of candy pink mixed with her long blonde waves, she’s also been spotted channelling a full color barbie pink bob. Truly the messiah of reinvention, we can’t wait to see her next look – perhaps a work of pink hair art?

Nicki Minaj

Nicki Minaj with pink hair

Nicki’s effervescent style always keeps us guessing. Bursting onto the scene with a bright pink hair do and a fashion forward look that embraced everything pink, including mixing and matching pink shoes, clothes and accessories, its no surprise that Nicki is now synonymous with the color.

She has worn her pink hair in a multitude of different lengths and styles making her hair as groundbreaking as her music.

Katy Perry

Katy Perry Pink Hair

Katy Perry says her style influences are vintage 50’s clothes, attention to detail and bright colors, and we can see what she means!

After the release of her latest album, Katy became a candy cane beauty, wearing both purple and pink hair colors that wowed us all. Katy’s shade of pink is sweet and sugary, although she went through several hair color stages to get there. A natural brunette, Katy’s curls went from blue to purple to white and finally to a pale pink tint.

Audrey Kitching

Audrey Kitching pink hair

Philly born Audrey is as well known for her fashion disasters as she is for her signature pink mane.

Audrey’s a bohemian baby born in the wrong decade – she adores 70’s inspired fashion and her tie-dye style extends to her hair as well as a wardrobe, notably when she sported multi colored highlights in her blonde hair. But Audrey is most famous for her bright pink hair and wears it as an all over color – as edgy and individual as she is.

Lady Gaga – A True Style Icon

November 9, 2011 By Laura Young 1 Comment

Lady Gaga with platinum blonde hair

Lady Gaga, real name Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta (yes really!), is an American singer-songwriter who has risen to fame in the last three years as one of the most stylish and controversial stars out there.

She’s sold over 64 million records worldwide, including several number ones, and she’s worked with artists such as Beyoncé and Akon. With a phenomenal sense of personal style and her tireless charity work, notably with the LGBT community and for HIV and AIDs charities, it’s no wonder that Lady Gaga has won a place in our hearts.

May I Introduce You To Lady Gaga…

Lady Gaga has always had a keen interest in music and was enrolled at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts from 2003 until she was signed with Streamline Records, an imprint of Interscope Records, where she worked as a songwriter. During this time, she caught the attention of Akon, a fellow recording artist, who signed her to his own label, Kon Live Distribution.

She released The Fame in 2008 and two more albums have followed, The Fame Monster in 2009 and Born This Way in 2011. She’s received numerous awards and accolades for her contributions to the music industry, including twelve Grammy award nominations, five Grammy awards, and two Guinness world records (most singles in the charts for the longest period of time and most searched for woman on the internet). Gaga was named the Top Artist of the Year in 2010 by Billboard.

The Style Icon Is Unleashed On The World!

Lady Gaga with blonde hair in just dance video

When Lady Gaga arrived on the scene in 2008 her look was relatively restrained (at least compared to the Gaga we know and love nowadays) with long blonde hair and simple yet edgy styling, but since the release of her first single ‘Just Dance’ Gaga has experimented with a whole host of hair colors and styles along with a range of different music genres.

Female celebrities often fit themselves into one of three categories, cute blonde, sophisticated brunette, or fiery red-head – Lady Gaga ignores that trend entirely and instead we see her rocking all sorts of unusual colors, from lilac to bright yellow to turquoise. She’s actually had more hair colors than we at Hair Color Code can remember, so let’s have a look back through some of her most memorable hair moments.

Although Lady Gaga first came to our attention as a blonde, she is actually a natural brown-haired beauty, would you believe she dyed her hair lighter to stop constant comparisons with Amy Winehouse!

Lady Gaga with blonde hair and a bo

In 2008, Gaga had long blonde hair with a blunt fringe and this was when we first saw her distinctive hair bows.

Lady Gaga with a hint of pink in blonde hair

In the summer of 2009 Lady Gaga decided to tantalise the crowds with a peek of lilac and pink underneath her blonde hair.

Lady Gaga in a lace Elizabethan collar

The blonde remained in place whilst she was promoting The Fame Monster although it was teased into a number of avant-garde hairstyles, including a bizarre creation that looked like an Elizabethan collar and a candyfloss masterpiece covered with a black lace veil.

Lady Gaga with bright pink hair

Between 2009 and the launch of her third album in 2011, Lady Gaga has sported a raibow’s worth of hair colors, including dip-dyed egg yolk yellow ends, platinum gray hair with bright turquoise dip-dyed ends, a blue rinse, dip-dyed green, gray, lilac and white hair, baby pink hair, darker turquoise hair…and then back to the color we all know and love on her, platinum blonde.

Lady Gag with electric blue hair

Every look was original and edgy, and you can almost guarantee that you won’t see Gaga’s hair color on anyone else. Her hair color often changes to match whatever couture creation she is rocking at the time – for example, the green hair co-ordinated perfectly with an odd outfit that was little more than a see-through bodysuit with nipple covers and panties.

There’s no doubt about it, Lady Gaga is a true fashionista with a dazzling array of wigs, extensions and different colored hair pieces that any pop star would be proud of. Adapting her hair color to match her mood and her wardrobe, Lady Gaga has a true sense of style and fierceness that inspires millions of people all over the world.
Ok, so this is where we usually point you in the direction of particular shades to help you color match our featured celebrity, but frankly if you are inspired by ‘so cutting edge its amazing she hasn’t drawn blood’ Lady Gaga, then our advice is to find a fashion forward salon and let the professionals handle it!

Anne Hathaway – Classy & Cool

October 21, 2011 By Laura Young 2 Comments

Anne Hathaway with brown hair color

Since her move into popular films, Anne Hathaway has been firmly on our radar here at Hair Color Code as an elegant actress with bags of charming personality and a stunning sense of style. Let’s look back at the meteoric rise, and out of this world hair, of the lovely Miss Hathaway.

The career so far

Born Anne Jacqueline Hathaway in 1982, she started her career on the stage before appearing in a few small television roles, including the 1999 television series ’Get Real’. Anne honed her trade in a number of family-orientated films (and who doesn’t love ‘The Princess Diaries’) before hitting the big time with a series of box-office smashes including ‘Bride Wars’ with Kate Hudson and ‘Alice in Wonderland’ with Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham-Carter.

A native New Yorker, Anne was born in Brooklyn to a lawyer and an actress, her mother Kathleen Ann, who was the inspiration behind Anne’s career choice. She has two brothers and was raised Catholic with ‘really strong values’. However, she turned her back on religion at the age of 15 after her elder brother Michael came out as gay, deciding that she couldn’t be part of a religion that condemned her brother’s sexual orientation.

Anne attended a creative school in New York where she participated in numerous plays and school shows – in fact, her high school performance as Winnifred in ‘Once Upon a Mattress’ earned her a nomination for Best Performance by a High School Actress by Paper Mill Playhouse. During her high school years, she was in many plays at the aforementioned Playhouse including ‘Jane Eyre’ and ‘Gigi’. After high school, she became the first teenager to be admitted into the Barrow Group Theater Company’s program where she trained as a stage actress. Three days after a performance in the choir at Carnegie Hall, she was cast in the TV show ‘Get Real’ where her acting career really took off.

The Hair Color resumé

When Anne first appeared on our television screens she sported deep chestnut brown locks, parted to the side and down to her shoulder. It was a very simple look and probably reflected her young age as it was unfussy and very easy to maintain. For her on-screen debut in ‘The Princess Diaries’ her hair was longer with a mahogany tone which was styled to be big, frizzy and wild at the start of the film and sleek and elegant at the end of the film. In her second film, ‘The Other Side of Heaven’, she sported a similar style, parted to one side, but her hair was a lighter brown tone although still with reddish undertones.

Anne’s hair color has remained pretty constant since her big screen debut, occasionally getting a little lighter and redder, occasionally getting slightly darker (now there‘s a girl who understands the ‘no more than 3 shades from your natural color’ rule). With her luminescent skin tone Anne can carry off both light and dark shades, but here at Hair Color Code we love her darker hair as it makes her look like a particularly gorgeous porcelain doll. Although Anne doesn’t tend to go for dramatic color changes she has changed the style up a little bit, for example in 2008 she had a modern bob which she wore both shiny and straight and loose and textured. The bob was a look we’ve never seen on Anne before and it really suited her, making her look more current and edgy.

In 2010, we saw Anne with perhaps her prettiest hair style and color to date, a centre parting with loose, flowing waves and a few scatterings of golden coppery highlights. But in the biggest film of the year, Alice in Wonderland, we saw Anne as an icy blonde playing the Ice Queen. And surprisingly, such a drastic change suited her far more than anyone would have thought!

How to get hair color like Anne Hathaway…

Anne Hathaway is definitely one of the classiest celebrities that we’ve come across at HCC and her signature hair color and style really enhance her elegant demeanour. A fantastic actress and a glamorous Hollywood style icon to boot, Anne Hathaway is sure to keep us lusting after her luscious locks for quite some time yet.
