Jennifer Aniston – The Hair Color Icon

August 18, 2011 By Susie B 2 Comments

Jennifer Aniston with her natural hair color

She’s the best friend of Courtney Cox, the ex-wife of Brad Pitt and she has earned herself the title of the definitive hair color icon of the 90’s. If you guessed Jennifer Aniston, you are absolutely right!

Aniston worked as a Bike Messenger, Telemarketer and Waitress before getting her big break as Rachel on the hit television series Friends, and guess what Rachel did for a living, yep, she was a Waitress. Coincidence? Maybe, maybe not.

Remarkably enough, Aniston was asked to audition for the role of Monica and she outright refused, instead deciding to audition for the character of Rachel Green. Talk about a woman’s intuition! She successfully nailed the role and Friends launched her to the fame and fortune she had always dreamed of.

At the age of 42, Aniston can still warm our hearts through her fun and sexy film roles. However just like anything in life, you can’t please everyone, in the words of Aniston herself, “It’s impossible to satisfy everyone, and I suggest we all stop trying”. I couldn’t have said it better myself Jennifer.

According to Jennifer’s circle of friends and acquaintances she is invigorating, energizing and inspiring. Even Brian Bouma, who allegedly had a secret relationship with Aniston, describes her as “smart, amazing and fabulous”. People love her because they can relate to her and her experiences, and they love the way in which she chooses to live life to the fullest. But it’s not just her infectious personality and fabulous acting that has contributed to her success, Jennifer’s hair style (fondly known as ‘the Rachel’) was imitated by women throughout the 90’s and is arguably the most well known look of our times.

Over the past few years Aniston has changed her hair more times than a baby changes its diaper, and we absolutely love her for it. She’s had multi-tonal highlights, high layers, artistic color and sun kissed tones. After reading all of that you must be wondering how much time she spends by the hairdresser’s side!

Let’s take a look at a few of the colors Aniston has used over the years:

The Rachel

This is the most popular hair style worn by Aniston, and the look that made her an icon. According to Aniston’s hair stylist ‘The Rachel’, which is loved by women all over the world, was a fluke. The saying goes “Every fault is a fashion”, and this couldn’t have been truer in this case. With her medium-length hair, the stylist decided on a whim to layer the hair around her bangs and add a few blonde highlights to her natural ginger locks, and the rest, they say, is history!

Sun Kissed

By celebrity standards, Jennifer is quite conservative when it comes to picking her hair colors, and she’s never tried the extreme stand-out colors we are seeing from the new breed of Hollywood star. Aniston prefers to go with more classic and stylish looks, and make them her own. Our favorite example of this was when she was spotted on the Caribbean beaches sporting a fabulous sun kissed blonde look, again seamlessly mixed with her natural tones to create a distinctive and iconic style.

Brunette Bombshell

When Jennifer turned out for her latest staring role in the movie ‘Horrible Bosses’, we were all shocked and amazed to see her sporting a sultry brunette look. This is the boldest change she’s ever made to her hair color, and I don’t think there is a person on a planet who wouldn’t agree that she looks great.

If you want to recreate one of Jennifer’s trademark looks, or if you want to blend your own natural colors to create your own Aniston-esque style, try using multi-tonal highlights within a close range to your base color. These subtle effects can be mesmerizing, and it works with straight, curly and wavy hair. Don’t feel you have to go big and bold to create something truly distinctive, if Jennifer Aniston has taught us anything it’s that natural beauty and subtle changes can still create a worldwide style icon.

Emma Stone – The Queen of Geek Chic!

August 11, 2011 By Susie B 3 Comments

Emma Stone with glamorous brown hair

Make way, noobs – there’s a new geek muse in town. Emma Stone may not have set out to conquer geek hearts everywhere when she moved from Arizona to LA at fifteen, but starring in cult hits Superbad and Zombieland has cemented her popularity as quirky actress du jour.

More geek chick cred? Emma recently starred in Easy A – an adaptation of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Scarlet Letter – and is slated to play Gwen Stacy in the upcoming Spiderman reboot.

But whatever role she plays, Emma Stone has managed to capture the public’s heart and imagination. There’s just something so sweet, unique and down-to-earth about this young girl, so much that she’s a breath of fresh air in a sea of cookie-cutter ingénues. Forget boring! Emma Stone’s dizzying array of ever-changing hair color alone is enough to send everyone into a tizzy.

The Hair Color History…

Emma Stone natural hair in Superbad

Though Emma usually changes her hair color to suit filming requirements, it’s undeniable that the girl understands the power of a good dye job. Here’s something a lot of people probably don’t know about Emma Stone – the popular redhead is actually *drum roll please* a natural blonde! Her first LA agent sent her nothing but “cheerleader roles”, something that fifteen-year-old didn’t exactly relish. Young Emma decided to her hair dark brown and serendipitously got her first serious role shortly after. How’s that for powerful hair color?

Since then, Emma has dyed her hair different shades for various roles. For her breakout role as Jules in Superbad, director Judd Appatow suggested dyeing her hair red, inadvertently creating her iconic image as the ginger everyone has come to know and love. For her role as a bassist in The Rocker, Emma took on a dark golden blonde but eventually resumed her redheaded ways for The House Bunny. For horror-comedy Zombieland, Emma sported a deep brunette that offset her bright green eyes wonderfully.

But the most shocking change of all came when the young actress stepped out with platinum blonde locks for her role as Gwen Stacy in the latest Spiderman reboot. Though naturally blonde, people assumed that Emma had finally been consumed by Hollywood and ended up dyeing her hair light blonde to fit in with the rest of the business’s young actresses. Fans of the “ginger” look calmed down, though, after Emma returned to her (albeit fake) redhead roots for her latest film The Help. Bonus: her usually straight hair has been transformed into gorgeous curls!

Off the set, Emma has ditched the blondish red curls for a fierier shade reminiscent of her Superbad days. What color she’ll choose next, no one knows, but for now, Emma Stone’s got our hearts on fire – burning as bright as her beautiful red hair.

Although Emma isn’t afraid to change her hair color, we all tend to remember her for her amazing trademark red style (right). To achieve this look, try Clairol Natural Instincts Golden Shimmer Hair Color, Golden Sienna.

July 17, 2011 By Susie B Leave a Comment

Rihanna with bright red hair color in 2011

As 2010 passed, we waved goodbye to a great year for style with various celebrities, icons and public figures fighting for the title of Hair Color Hero. So, what’s new in 2011?

Here at HairColorCode HQ we went through a staggering 12 different hair colors last year, and we are well under way to beating that this year (it’s all part of the job!) We strive to keep you updated with all the colors that are setting the worlds of celebrity and fashion on fire, so we have been keeping our eyes on the latest trends all the way from the catwalk to the shopping malls. Here is our hair color guide for 2011:

It’s all about the Royals

The whole world had their eyes on London this summer due to the Royal Wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton. As ever, style and fashion are at the forefront of reacting to these trends and you can expect to see the regal look take the world by storm this year. When this comes to hair color, it’s all about being under-stated and elegant, and we would suggest looking for a mid-range moderate brown to match Kates stunning look.

Royal Adventure

If you want to stick with the Royal theme, but feel like being a bit more adventurous than a moderate brown, you can always go for the other color which has dominated the fashion world since the engagement was announced; Royal Blue. After William proposed to Kate by offering her his mothers (the late Princess Diana) engagement ring, the world fell back in love with the sapphire stone and its deep blue tones. Since the engagement was announced there has been a boom in sapphire jewelry and Union Jack fashion, which means that royal blues are dominating the style world. If you want to add some blue tones to your hair color you can be a subtle as you like, with the look being particularly striking when used blended into dark brunette and black hair.

Look To The Stars

In 2010 Rihanna was undoubtedly the biggest starlet in the world, and not only was she lighting up the music charts, she also led the way in style and fashion. Here at HairColorCode HQ we love her quirky and unique look, and her bravery in experimenting with new hair styles and colors. Rihannas meteoric rise to fame looks to continue in 2011, and we recommend keeping your eye on the Princess of Pop to discover the latest trends before they hit the streets. Rihanna was last spotted at the Vogue 2011 shoot, sporting a bold deep pink that shows she is still experimenting, and still getting it right!

The Radical Change

2011 isn’t going to be a year for tinkering with the colors in your natural range, it’s all about drastic change. We are going to see an influx of celebrities and style icons going from blonde to brunette, from brunette to blonde, and everyone flocking to go red! We have already seen drastic hair changes from Natasha Poly, Eniko Mihalik and Lily Cole, and this doesn’t look like a year where anyone will be doing things by half. So if you have ever considered a radical change in your hair color, 2011 is the year to go for it!

Hot Hot Summer

The experts are telling us that the world is going to see a heat wave this year, which means we were all be flocking to the beach as soon as the summer hits. With guys and gals across the globe basking in the beautiful weather, the natural sun kissed look is going to be huge. They key to achieving this look is by going for a light, natural blonde with plenty of different tones, or if you have darker hair, try to add the lightest tones within your natural range.

So, there are our tips for the hair colors that are going to be a sensation this year, and fear not, we will have our ear to the ground to keep you up to date with the latest hair color trends as and when they happen. If you spot a hair color trend developing, or see a celebrity rocking a color that you just know is going to catch on, then get in touch and let us know!

Beyonce – The Ultimate Hair Color Diva

July 14, 2011 By Susie B 2 Comments

Beyonce looking stylish with light hair

Starting at the tender age of seven, Beyonce Knowles entered her first talent show hoping for her shot at stardom, but nothing could have prepared her for the lifetime journey of fame and fortune that she’s experiencing now. If someone had told her that back then, she probably would have dismissed it any way. Wouldn’t you?

The career so far…

Her father, Matthew Knowles, left his job at Xerox to manage the group, Destiny’s Child in 1996. It wasn’t long before they were discovered by no other than Whitney Houston herself. Well after that this group just went off the charts (or should I say; up the charts!).

Despite hit number one singles and selling millions of albums the group eventually separated. That did not stop Miss Knowles. She was going full steam ahead.

From winning Grammy awards to being the first black woman that won ASCAP’s Pop Songwriter of the Year Award, the second African-American to be on the cover of Sports Illustrated’s swimsuit issue and the first woman honored with the International Artist Award, this vocal artist and actress shows no sign of retiring any time soon.

Also adding to her list of achievements in New York in 2008 she married the man of her dreams, music megastar Jay-Z.

The style to go with the voice…

Beyonce with blonde and brown hair

Anyone who has ever laid eyes on Beyonce and has heard her powerful voice can’t help but fall in love with this energetic, hard working woman who is full of determination to continue striving for the top. Some people say she has it all – a great career, great body, great voice and a great man by her side.

Although Beyonce is known for her fierce dance moves and amazing voice, she has a terrific sense of style and her hair styles are always changing. When you think you’ve got one of her looks down, she’s already onto the next one. She has gone from blonde to sleek and straight to perm to even having a tint of red in her hair.

Beyonce trademark hair style and color

When wearing her trademark sleek hairstyle, her hair is parted so that it has no choice but to frame her beautiful face. She also wears this sleek and golden look straight down or half up in a pouffed style that makes her eyes more noticeable. However she has been know to go in the opposite direction, and Beyonce has also been seen with thick curls or relaxed hair with slight waves in it. If you want curls like this there is no celebrity secret, just invest in a curling iron and be prepared to spend some serious time in front of the mirror.

Beyonce is one of the current crop of A list celebrities who really know how to to rock their hair color, and she has used this to full effect over the years. We have seen her hair range from jet black, to auburn, a variety of blondes, she’s even managed to find time to sport an amazing chesnut red color. It’s no wonder that she was quickly snapped up to be the face of L’oreal hair color!

Beyonce with dark hair in afro style

Here at HairColorCode HQ we love a diva who isn’t afraid to experiment with hair color, and digging through the archives it’s nearly impossible to find an occasion where Beyonce has got it wrong. There have been some criticisms that Beyonce’s preference for a lighter hair color is disrespectful to her African American heritage, however she has gone on record saying how hurtful these comments are, and like any girl, she just wants to have a bit of fashion fun.

Do you want hair color like Beyonce?

Beyonce’s signature color is beautiful mixture of golden blondes and honey browns, and after years of experimenting with lighter and dark shades, she seems to have settled on a mid range look that she has totally made her own. Do you think she ever dreamed of a day when ladies around the globe would walk into the salon and simply ask for ‘a Beyonce’?

If you want to try Beyonce’s hair color at home, try Feria Loreal in shade 73, Golden Sunset. She likes it so much she starred in a commercial for it!

The Hair Color Evolution Of Jennifer Lopez

July 9, 2011 By Susie B 9 Comments

Jennifer Lopez Hair Color

Unless you have been living under a rock for the past few decades, you have probably heard of Jennifer Lopez, a.ka. JLo. You know JLo – the singer, actress, celebrated dancer, hit record producer, Grammy nominee, fashion mogul and more recently, one of the judges of the popular reality show American Idol.

The ultimate style icon…

Already in her early 40’s Jennifer Lopez still manages to captivate her beloved followers not only with her intriguing life but also with her ability to defy aging. And aside from her voluptuous body and her money-spinning voice, she is also known for her gorgeous hair and timeless style.

In most of her music videos, you can see her sporting her trademark hairstyle – loose and sexy curls framing her face. However, she is every bit the enchanting female when her hair is styled in tight curls and adorned with a floral pin or a bejewelled hair accessory.

Jennifer Lopez black and white

Most people would agree that Jennifer Lopez is a style chameleon. She tends to change her look depending on where she is in her life or who she is dating at the time. For instance, you could see her far more often in street style outfits with headbands over dreadlocks while dating Puff Daddy.

She has made a couple of hair and fashion faux pas (but who hasn’t!), and it wasn’t until the past few years that she has finally settled into her permanent elegant and timeless hairstyle. Out with the sporty look and in with the glamorous pulled-back hairstyles and messy updos. Her old Hollywood-inspired hairstyle in 2007 got her two thumbs up from the style world.

The hair colors that have defined JLo

Jennifer Lopez with lighter brown hair

Her transition to different hair colors through her years in Hollywood are also worth noticing. We loved her as a simple and stunning brunette when she first broke out on the scene and I am sure you have also seen her two-tone hair back in 2000 (although that might be one she wants to forget). She is better known for her honey and caramel hair color that developed in early part of the century, and we even saw her experimenting with some slightly ginger tones. The days of experimenting seem to be over though, as in her recent American Idol appearances she has switched back to her classic caramel and honey hair color trademark and loose curls.

Want Hair Color like Jennifer Lopez?

Jennifer Lopez with her trademark hair color

At HairColorCode HQ the thing we love about Jlo is that she wears a color that looks 100% Hollywood, but can be achieved by anyone using the right hair dyes. It wont be an easy task though, as Jennifer’s color tends to layer browns and caramels in a style that can be quite tricky for a beginner. If you are wanting to achieve this look but are feeling a little nervous, I would recommend speaking with a colorist or a friend who has experience with tricky applications.

If you decide to go it alone and want to find a base color that matches Jennifer’s classic brown shade, try L’Oreal Paris Superior Preference Ultra Light Natural Brown UL51
